(Photo courtest of www.dragracecentral.com)POMONA, CA (February 11-14, 2010) -- The NHRA Series kicked off its season at the 50th annual NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona last weekend. In the seven open-tire Sportsman classes, Hoosier tires were used by eight of the 14 finalists which was more than all other tire brands combined. Chris Demke, Joey Severence, Sean O'Bannon, Doug Gordon, Ryan McClanahan, Kevin Wright, Ed Olpin and Jimmy Lewis were the eight Hoosier-shod finalists at Pomona. When the smoke had cleared, three of them emerged winners in their respective classes.

TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER
After a difficult 2009 season in the T/A Dragster class, Team Hoosier looked to kick off the New Year with a win. Despite the poor odds with just six of the 16 cars on hand riding on Hoosiers, two Hoosier-shod drivers made it to the final round.

Chris Demke was a finalist at last year's event and was looking for his first National event win (0-8) driving the Peen-Rite-Abrasive Finishing B/AD for car owner Jerry Maddern. Demke met Joey Severance in the final round. Demke, using a new set of 34.5/17.0-16 C2055 (18790) tires, nailed the tree with a .009 reaction time to Severance's .039 using a pair of Hoosier 36.0/17.0-16 C2055 (18900) drag tires.

Demke went on to take his first National event win at the 50th Winternationals with a time of 5.332 seconds (269.67 mph) after Severance's dragster began to loose fluid just after the green light.

The T/A Funny Car class has been dominated by the Hoosier brand over the years with drivers on Hoosiers capturing 14 of the 16 National events in 2009.

The 2010 season may continue that success with 11 of the 16 cars on hand riding on the Hoosier brand. It all came down to the final round with a pair of drivers using Hoosiers squaring off.

Sean O'Bannon and Doug Gordon, each using a pair of Hoosier 34.5/17.0-16 C2055 (18790) drag tires, met in the final round. The cars were two of the quickest and fastest cars throughout eliminations.

Gordon got off the line first with a reaction time of .027 to O'Bannon's .060, but O'Bannon was able to track Gordon down and capture the win with a 5.541 ET (259.96 mph) to Gordon's 5.643 (259.16 mph).

STOCK ELIMINATOR
In Stock Eliminator, Ryan McClanahan captured runner-up honors using a pair of Hoosier 30.0/9.0-15 C06 (18209) drag tires. "Private Ryan" was consistently one of the fastest stockers in the 79-car field.

SUPER COMP
In the third all-Hoosier final, Kevin Wright met Ed Olpin in Super Comp. This one was over early when Olpin was unable to start his engine handing the win to Wright. Of the 88 cars in the field, 45 elected to ride on Hoosier tires.

SUPER GAS
Jimmy Lewis, with six National wins, finished runner-up in Super Gas riding on Hoosier tires. The Hoosier brand was used by 33 of the 84 cars competing in the class.

Hoosier Drag Racing Product Manager Faron Lubbers was in Pomona for the event.

Lubbers commented, "This was a great way to start off the new season. Hoosier-shod drivers again proved to be a force at this year's Winternationals."

Lubbers added, "We are really excited about the new season. The Hoosier drag tire line up has never been stronger."

The NHRA Series will be back in action this weekend at Phoenix for the NHRA Arizona Nationals.
